What is Rogation Sunday?
The word rogation comes from the Latin word which means ‘to ask’.  We ask for a lot of things from God – what are we asking for on this particular day?  The website of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has a very good description of what Rogations days mean for us today.  In part it says:
‘Stewardship of Creation is an ongoing ministry in the church.  The creation which God declared good is entrusted to the care of humankind.  Exercising that care is one dimension of daily Christian discipleship.  Rogation days are a way for the church to honour God for the gift of creation and to pray for the land, the gift of labour, and the needs of all people ..’
These days underscore the dependence of all people, urban and rural, on the fruitfulness o the earth and human labour.
Many years ago our ancestors in faith were able to obtain much of their living from the sea.  As they cleared land, they established gardens and farms to help feed themselves.  Today we continue to grow from the same land that they cleared – we grow gardens and farm for food – but more we are blessed to be able to grow simply for the beauty of God’s Creation.
On 22 May, at our 11:00 am Sunday service we will celebrate the beauty of all creation.  We will ‘ask for’ God’s blessing on our labour as we exercise our stewardship on the land and sea.  We will ‘ask for’ God’s blessing on the soil in our gardens and farms, the seeds, and the plants we will grow there to nourish our bodies and spirits.
