MISSION FOCUS

People often ask megachurch pastor Mike Slaughter what he’s going to do next, where he sees himself in five or ten years.  Mike responds that if he is in charge of his own life, he knows the answer to that question.  But if God is in charge of his life, he has no idea how to answer that question.

Post-modern leaders help people ask questions like: Who is in control of your life? Who’s piloting your ship? Are you at the helm, or is God?  Are you going your way, or going God’s way?

Post-modern leaders are not customer-centric, but Christo-centric.  Their focus is not ‘what the customer wants’ but ‘what Christ wants’.   (Leonard Sweet, Aquachurch)

What is Sweet telling us that is essential about leading a church, and how does this get played out in our decision-making.  (Graham Standish)

MISSION FOCUS
To keep ourselves spiritually alive we must constantly renew our faith.  We  are like pilots of fogbound steamers, peering into the gloom in front of us, listening for the sounds of other ships, and we can only reach our harbour if we keep alert.  The spiritual life is, then, first of all a matter of keeping awake.  We must not lose our sensitivity to spiritual inspirations.  We must always be able to respond to the slightest warnings that speak, as though by a hidden instinct, in the depth of the soul that is spiritually alive.  (Thomas Merton, Thoughts in Solitude)

What is Merton telling us about what is essential about living a life of faith, and how does this play out in every day life?  (Gordon Standish)
